Know what stays. Know what goes.
The printable shows the full, upright design. Check the folding notes below before choosing how to prepare the sheet.
Preserve narrow connections between shapes. Loose shapes need a backing sheet or separate placement; the drawing has not been physically tested for connectivity.
From one A4 sheet to your paper cut
Fold, cut & unfold
Both halves of this finished design match. Use one center fold for the printable version, then open it for delicate finishing.
Start with a complete, uncut sheet. Each picture shows the paper before that step; red dashes mark only the next cuts. Keep the surrounding paper until the outside-cutting step.
1. Start with a full A4 sheet
Take one blank A4 sheet (210 x 297 mm), preferably thin colored paper. Print PDF page 1 separately at 100% and check its 50 mm line. Center the pattern on your blank sheet; do not cut off the surrounding paper yet.
2. Fold and transfer half
Fold once on the vertical center of the lantern. Trace the right half of the cap, curved body, lower band and tassel. Mark the long curved openings separately from the central rib; keep the printed rib widths.
3. Cut the inside first
Keep the surrounding sheet in place. Cut the long white openings beside the center rib, then the small tassel opening. An adult can start closed holes on a mat. Turn the paper along each curve and stop before the top and bottom bands.
4. Cut the outside contour
Cut the cap, rounded sides and tassel outline last. Leave the narrow ribs joined to both bands and keep the hanger attached. Unfold by supporting the broad center, without pulling on the ribs or tassel.
5. Unfold and refine
Open the folded paper slowly. Matching openings now appear on both sides. Lay it flat and trim only attached scraps or uneven edges. Preserve the top cap, central rib, side ribs and bottom band. A finished opening does not need to be cut again.
Use thin paper: two layers should remain easy to control.
PDF page 1 is the clean full-size pattern; pages 2–3 show this complete sequence. A4 is the default; the Letter download uses a Letter sheet. Try a scrap first to check fragile bridges.
Print, prepare, and make
Match the PDF to your paper size and check the 50 mm scale line. Keep the pattern-specific folding sequence above beside you as you work.

Paper cutting tools and materialsA festival lantern for a window or greeting card
This lantern paper cutting uses a rounded body, a small top tab, and a hanging detail below. Its broad central shape and curved openings make the silhouette easy to recognize against a contrasting surface. In the lantern motif story, the design introduces reunion and celebration. Use it beside a personal greeting, or plan a group of window decorations for Chinese New Year.
The matching halves allow a center fold, as shown in the guide. Watch the narrow strips beside the curved side openings and the short connection leading to the lower hanging shape. Cutting farther into either connection can release a piece you meant to keep. Support these areas when opening the folded sheet, and finish delicate edges with the paper flat.
Try the intended size before making several copies: a smaller lantern also has smaller paper bridges. For a card, leave room for your message instead of shrinking the motif too far. This is a flat paper decoration, not a cover for a flame or lamp.
