Chinese Paper Cutting Art: Patterns, Motifs and Where to Start

Chinese paper cutting art takes shape through the relationship between the paper left behind and the spaces cut away. Flowers, animals, auspicious characters, and everyday objects offer different ways to explore that balance. A plum blossom paper cutting template uses repeating petals, while the fish pattern combines an outline with interior detail. Compare the open spaces in a lotus design, the upright strokes of Fu, and the mirrored structure of a lantern. Broad connections help hold a design together; fine lines and small openings call for slower cutting. Motifs can carry different meanings across occasions and communities.
